The Language: The Malto language, spoken in the hilly tracts of the lower Ganges Valley, is one of the northernmost members of the Dravidian family. Although isolated from the rest of Dravidian and surrounded by a much larger population speaking Austro-Asiatic or Indo-Aryan languages, it preserves many archaic Dravidian traits, such as person-gender-number agreement of noun predicates with their subjects. It has also developed a uniquely complex verb morphology, resulting in part from language contact. With such features, Malto grammar will be of interest not only for Dravidianists, but for anyone interested in language contact and change.
The Author: Masato Kobayashi is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Tokyo, and the author of Historical Phonology of Old Indo-Aryan Consonants (Tokyo 2004). Enchanted by the rich folklore tradition still practiced by Malto speakers, Kobayashi has recorded their stories over a period of five years. Along with a concise fieldwork-based grammar covering the three major dialects of Malto, this book contains transcribed, glossed and translated texts of stories recorded in 13 villages. It also includes a glossary of words in the texts, and a section with parallel texts for advanced readers.
The Series: Text and Analysis of Indian Languages Series. This book is first in the newly launched series of analyses of Indian languages based more on freely spoken texts as compared to elicited forms and paradigms. Combined with annotated recordings, such works are expected to be highly useful in language documentation, historical studies, corpus linguistics and other such fields which value products that are based on methodical data collection, analysis and presentation.
