This study focuses on a Bantu language called Sukwa spoken in Chitipa district of northern Malawi. The study uses Optimality Theory as the main theoretical framework for the analysis of the phonological aspects of the language. The author argues that Sukwa usually strives for non-complex phonological features. In its consonant system and syllable structure, markedness constraints are mostly ranked higher in the hierarchy at the expense of faithfulness constraints.
