The story about a girl and her horse is set in the Harkerville Forest not too far from Plettenberg Bay, where Zahn and her sister are on holiday with their father and his considerably younger girlfriend. Zahn’s horse, Brigadier, has come along for the week in the cottage, specifically chosen for its stables and facilities for horses. On their second day Zahn meets two local boys who invite her to go riding in the dense forest. But from early morning Zahn has felt Brigadier’s unease. Is it just because he misses the wide open spaces around Melkbosstrand, or should Zahn have paid closer attention to Sibella’s warnings about night spirits? It is a holiday during which secrets will be revealed, mysteries solved and a family’s differences will come to the fore.
