Paco is one of the oldest districts of Manila. Its genesis dates back from the middle of the16th century when the Franciscan missionaries created the mission of Dilao in the sitio of Balete just across the moat outside the Walled City and near the estuary of the same name. The area was a marshland overgrown with plants with aromatic yellow roots called turmeric (Curcuma longa), or luyang dilaw, giving the town’s appellation. Today, the old town of Dilao or Paco has grown to become a modern day district of Manila – from quiet suburban village to a busy bustling hub. Paco has not forgotten its past, though. In its urban core and peripheries are landmarks and sites that have been preserved, restored or rehabilitated, becoming a part of this district’s rich history and heritage.
