After the event of Vietnamese volunteers entering Cambodia to help the country overthrow the genocide regime of the Khmer Rouge (January 1979), the relationship between Vietnam and ASEAN countries deteriorated, even fierce confrontation occurred in the first half of the 1980s of the twentieth century. It can be said that during this period, the Cambodian issue deeply influenced the relationship between Vietnam and ASEAN. In the second half of the 1980s, along with efforts to find peaceful solutions to the Cambodian conflict, relations between Vietnam and ASEAN improved. Through two meetings JIM-1 and JIM-2, Vietnam and ASEAN countries have worked closely together to find a political solution to the Cambodian issue. In addition to the profound changes in the world and in the region since 1989, the awareness of the common interests of Southeast Asia, the cooperation and development has led to greater sympathy between Vietnam and ASEAN on the security benefits of both sides.
