One of the outstanding features of Vietnamese Buddhism is the harmony - harmony with traditional Vietnamese beliefs, the harmony between the Buddhist sects, the harmony with the Tao and the Confucianism. Vietnamese Buddhism is not political but has close ties with the government and plays a major role in managing the country and educating its people. Vietnamese Buddhism is always in the spirit of deep incarnation. The monks, when needed, were able to mount horses and set out on the battlefield to join the people in destroying the enemies to keep the country. A special and quite common phenomenon in Vietnamese history is that many Confucianists still keep the Confucian spirit and also towards Buddhism with respect, especially the most famous Confucianists.
