In 2007 the author was approached by South Africa's Department of the Environment to head a project to research and develop scenarios that would form the basis for a national, long-term climate policy and for international negotiations on the future of global climate policy after 2012. Using pioneering methodology and cutting-edge work on the interaction between energy modelling and economy-wide modelling, Winkler drew up several scenarios for mitigating emissions. The implementation of the strategic options outlined in this resulting book will enable South Africa to turn climate change mitigation into a pro-growth, pro-job and prodevelopment strategy for the future.
