The first Edition of this book appeared in 1999. There were subsequent editions in which the research in the book was updated. Research over the last ten years has focused on the whereabouts of the youth whose stories are told in the book and whether they have been able to integrate back into mainstream society. These were boys who received all that they needed at the shelter where they stayed, they were educated and skills training was made available to them. This edition, The Fifth edition for 2010, traces the present situation of the main characters in each chapter. The importance of this last edition is that, for people who are seriously interested in the rehabilitation of street children, it gives a clear indication of how the shelter programmes for youth are not actually addressing the underlying problems of drug-addiction and anti-social activities. By the time they access a shelter it is, for the majority of boys, far to lateto change their ways unless under constant supervision. It is clear that innovative community based programmes need to tackle the issues before the boys run away from home. There is no other research programme that has followed up the same group of street youth, from childhood into middleage, over such a lengthy period.
