The achievements of a man of many talents: Charles Bell's contribution to the aesthetic, social and commercial life of nineteenth-century Cape Town was enormous, yet for a hundred years after his death very little was known about him. His paintings and sketches - many published for the first time - reveal a quirky sense of humour, but this was a man who took seriously his career in the Civil Service and his post as Surveyor-General at the Cape.
