Ancient Ceylon is the official Scientific Journal of the Department of Archaeology of the Government of Sri Lanka being published since 1971. The Journal is dedicated to disseminating the research results of the department by its staff as well as the on related subjects by the scholars outside. This volume of the Journal dedicated Dr. Gamini Wijesuriya on 'Conservation and Management of Heritage - Alternate Theoretical Reflections’ containing a selection of papers written and published internationally over the last 20 years. Dr. Gamini Wijesuriya was Director (Architectural Conservation) in the Department and later became the first Asian to hold an International Civil Servant position (2004-2017) at the International Centre for the Study of Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) the prestigious international inter-governmental body created by UNESCO in 1956 to promote conservation of cultural heritage worldwide. He has gained an international acclaim thanks of his work at international level on World Heritage and leading other innovative work such as living heritage and promoting People-centered Approaches to Conservation and management of culture and nature which are currently gaining an international recognition. As reflected in all his writings, the most remarkable characteristic is the influence and application of his work and experience in Sri Lanka. In the process, he has not only placed the Sri Lankan experiences on the world map through these papers but also has contributed to the advancement of the international heritage discourse. Among other things, his major projects while serving in the Department include the restoration of the Temple of the Tooth Relic, the most sacred sites for Buddhists and World Heritage site bombed by the LTTE in 1998. As a project Manager of ICCROM (2004-2018), he has involved in international activities including research and capacity building of heritage practitioners worldwide.
