I-XX: This book is a must for every diplomat interested in the politics of Thailand as well as those who are interested in the roller-coaster development of democracy of the Kingdom. The content of the book is not only about the thought and history behind the drafting of each version of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Siam but also provides the story behind the scenes of the conflict, twists and turns of the politics of the Thai people from the beginning until the XX version of the Constitution. From 1932 to 2022, the Kingdom has seen 13 successful coups from 18 coups out of these five were aborted. Normally, coup in Thailand is bloodless, except a few that took place on 6 October 1976 when civilians were specifically targeted especially in the massacre in Thammasat University, and the Palace Rebellion of 1949 which could be considered as the bloodiest incident ever taken place in modern history of Thailand. Readers can easily understand the unique character of Thai culture which is dominated by Theravada Buddhism which has made the country very conservative and complacent in term of reaction of the Thai people to any display of public injustice. The author of the book, Dr. Bunsong Chaletorn, has been active in politics; he was arrested by the military junta in his campaign for democracy in 1973, and later exiled to Sweden in 1976. Chaletorn provides the in-depth analysis of thoughts behind the drafting of each Constitution down to the current version. Chaletorn’s comments in Thai politics are taken seriously by local journalists and commonly referred to in most political media in Thailand; they are brave, candid and difficult to find in this country. The translator of the book, Dr. Mano Laohavanich, is also a well-known politician, a scholar and lecturer in Thai studies, a graduate from Oxford, Harvard and Hamburg Universities. Having seen the value of the Thai version of this book, he decided to translate the work it into British English making the language suitable for foreign readers as well as preserving all the content of the Thai version.
