IT DEFINES THE CONDITIONS AND THE CHA- RACTERISTICS OF THE RECENT DISCOVERIES MADE AT ANGKOR BOREI. IT ALSO DELIVERS THE FIRST SERIES OF EXCITING INTERPRETATIONS AND HYPOTHESES ON PRE-ANGKORIAN (AND AS THE CASE MAY BE, ANGKORIAN) ECONOMIC AND MONETARY PRACTICES, AS WELL AS ON THE USES AND THE EVOLUTION OF ROYAL POWER DURING AN ERA THAT, LACKING EXTENSIVE INFORMATION, HAS BEEN LEFT IN THE SHADOWS OF FUNAN AND ESPECIALLY ANGKOR. I will leave it to the specialists who have studied and who continue to study these discoveries to illuminate their full meaning and draw conclusions. It is nevertheless clear that the impressive collection of currencies uncovered at Angkor Borei, in varied and original forms, obliges us to rethink the functioning of monetary systems prevalent during this period in the Khmer territories, as well as the degree of monetary and market integration of this part of Southeast Asia.
