In Hafsatu Ahmadu Bello: The Unsung Heroine, Dr Ladi Adamu successfully promotes two significant and rewarding features of the new Nigerian historiography which have hitherto been in short supply in Nigerian scholarship. These are biography and gender. Her story and life (and dramatically, the death) of the Senior wife of Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria, both of whom were brutally gunned down by the soldiers in January 1966, derives much of its intellectual excitement from the brilliant series of interviews carried out by Dr Ladi Adamu with surviving members of Ahmadu Bello's colleagues and officials. Above all in importance are those of his personal staff who were in the Premier's house (today Arewa House) in Kaduna on that fateful night of January 14/15.
