Pagan Kano attained statehood in 9th century BC, and by the 14th century the advent of Islam brought a complete change from paganism to Islam. Thus, institutions for governance became established since then. As part of these institutions was the prison which this precolonial Kano society developed in order to handle its deviants. This book: Kano Prison Early Times to 1999, A Historical Perspective, developed from a Master of Arts (History) thesis, among other things, traces the history of this important institution from its inception to 1999. In addition, it examines the Jihadists system of rule in Kano and how they handled their deviants in conformity with Nass. The book also x-rays the role played by the British colonial administrators in the discharge of their judicial administration. This was a landmark moment for prisons in Kano due to the alien socio-economic and political policies brought by the British. Many people became victims of such policies thereby ending up in the prisons. More prisons were established and the old ones modernized during this period. The later years of colonial rule in Kano i.e 1935 to 1960, witnessed the merging of different prisons within the whole colony under one tread for administrative convenience and easy exploitation of labour. This shows changes, over time, in the administration style of the prisons. Finally, the book itemized the various sources used for this research.
