As Kenya celebrates 50 years since the country recovered independence from the British colonial rulers, many men and women who fought gallantly for freedom and the grabbed land, have died their role in struggle unrecognized. Most have died a poor, ailing lot, without adequate food, shelter or shoulders to lean on. They died unnoticed in independent Kenya, just as they would have died in the forest, detention camps or in emergency torture villages fighting to remove the country from shackles of colonialism in the 1950s. The few survivors of the Mau Mau Freedom Army still lumber along, old and many without limbs or with bullets still lodged in their bodies. They have for more than half a century endured neglect and painful physical and psychological scars which have immobilized them. Some of them are barely clothed as they were in the forests, prisons, detention camps and emergency villages. These heroic patriots who fought the might of the British Empire with bare hands, machetes and homemade guns and won, had their victory stolen from them at independence by corroborators who included loyalists and home guards. And since independence in 1963, the survivors of the Mau Mau uprising have remained a forgotten lot. Nothing has been done to have their stolen land or property (that reverted from the white to the black masters), returned to them and they have not been compensated for the suffering they underwent during the struggle for independence. This is the story of torture and suffering under both the colonial and independent regimes as told by some of the Mau Mau survivors.
