Jamdani is a magnificent piece of art, a unique cultural heritage of Bangladesh that is part of an ancient handloom. Rich in intricately patterned and artistically elaborate motifs, the Jamdani textile is a type of Muslin. UNESCO has inscribed Bangladesh' Jamdani in their representative list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Today, the challenge is to sustain this cottage industry. That is why the National Crafts Council of Bangladesh (NCCB) has supported this traditional craft and promoted the preservation of traditional Jamdani designs. In this volume, NCCB has worked for the recreation of long-lost motifs and designs and support to a traditional weaving technique. These designs have been collected through extensive research and have been preserved on woven samples by Jamdani weavers. Line drawings of these designs printed here along with articles on production and trade and techniques of weaving provide a rich source of information. This volume is not only a collector's item but also a treasure for researchers.
