We may briefly define local history by claiming it to be that which describes the history of a particular place, its geographical aspects, various statistics connected with it, trade and business thereof, administration, revenue system, social customs and practices, cultural rites and ceremonies and the socio-economic conditions as well as the political antecedents of the masses of that place. This chapter is mainly devoted to an adequate understanding of the pivotal importance, problems and possibilities of local history in the context of Bangladesh. It also attempts as briefly as possible to trace the origin and evolution of this branch of history, and some suggested solutions to the problems raised in the chapter have been included.
