Most contemporary literature on Islamic architecture appears to emphasize the physical rather than the spiritual dimensions. The impact of secular thinking has obscured the transcendent meaning in architectural symbolism. In line with an Islamic response to the intellectual and cultural challenges of the secular world, this book attempts to explain the effects of the secular perspective and to trace the routs and developments of Islamic intellectual tradition during the islamization of the Malay world in association to its influences on Malay thought and architecture. This book also identifies the most significant islamic worldview that articulates the spiritual aspects of Malay traditional architecture. It also elaborates Islamic symbolism which can be found in the architecture of Kampung Laut Mosque in Kelantan. The mosque is used to relate the influence of Islamic spirituality in Malay architecture in the past.
