The First Family of Kibundo is set in the fictitious hilly village of Kibundo in western Kinia. The novel revolves around Naomi, her well-to-do father Chepkuto and her mother Pamela. Naomi, a highly intelligent girl, is an only child. Caught up in a society that frowns upon any form of barrenness – and absence of a son – Chepkuto discontinues his conjugal obligation to Pamela. He marries a second wife. She infects Chepkuto with a strange disease. Chepkuto dies. His death plunges Naomi and her mother into trials and tribulations. Is this the end of the road for Naomi’s academic ambition? How does she relate to her stepmother in the new circumstances?
