West Africa has become home to quite a variety of security threats and challenges: conflicts, insurgencies, separatist agitations, terrorism, violent extremism, illegal migration, proliferation of small arms and light weapons, human trafficking, illicit drugs and drug abuse. When this reality is juxtaposed with failing state capacities, governance deficits, economic weaknesses and vulnerabilities, social infrastructure and services recession, climate change, increasing populations especially the youth bulge that is regarded as a time bomb, and the debilitations of COVID-19, the correlations appear obvious as do the immensity of the dangers, threats and challenges.
