Singapore has seen rising interest in strata malls over recent years, with the landmark decision to conserve Golden Mile Complex in 2021 and the creative takeover of Peace Centre in 2023 together marking increasing interest in the social, heritage and architectural values of these buildings. “Singapore Strata Malls: A Retrospective for the Future” is a book that expands this growing dialogue. Born out of five years of conversations, observations and research on Singapore’s strata malls, the book offers a diverse overview of strata malls: their urban and architectural character, their predisposition for creative interventions, and their conduciveness to breed specific kinds of shops and activities. Split into two halves of “Structure” and “Spirit”, the book presents a new framework for understanding our malls according to their physical characteristics on the one hand, and their intangible character on the other. The “Structure” half of the book details architectural and urban analysis of Singapore’s strata malls, while the “Spirit” half compiles provocative essays documenting various experiments performed in strata malls.
