This textbook gives a descriptive account of the phonological and morphological system of standard Turkish spoken in Turkey. It explores the major aspects of Turkish articulatory phonetics and segmental phonology, also covering morpho-phonological alternations, phonological processes/rules and word level stress. In presenting the internal structure of well-formed words, the criteria for identifying word classes and the form and function of nominal and verbal grammatical morphemes are discussed at length. Since the main purpose is to achieve descriptive adequacy, adopting a basic generative bias, the topics covered are substantiated with a wide range of illustrative examples.
