This is a history of Asante (now in Ghana) written between 1937 and 1846 under the direction of the then reigning Asantehene Otumnfuo, Nana Osei Agyeman rempeh II. Its continuous narrative covers the period from the later 17th century to the 1930s in great detail. It is probably the longest such text written by Africans about any state and society in sub-Saharan Africa. There is rising – indeed, some might say urgent – public interest in the African past and so this book will have a wide appeal beyond its value as an academic text.
