Rather than simply narrating the missionary process or the development of dioceses, the book places Christianity in the broader context of the economic, political and cultural transformations that took place in Vietnam during the period of East Asian maritime exchanges. One of the highlights of the work is its approach to historical sociology. Christianity is investigated as a social phenomenon rather than a pure belief system. From the church organization, the Vietnamese clergy and laity to the formation of the Vietnamese script, educational activities, book compilation, cultural adaptation and changes in community life are all placed in connection with the specific historical context.
