Karam Singh was born in Singapore in December 1939. His family returned to the Punjab (India) prior to the Second World War and subsequently returned to Singapore when the war ended. Karam Singh started his career as a teacher in 1960 and got married in Dec 1963. He joined the Peoples Defence Force (PDF) at the end of 1967 and was mobilized by the Singapore Armed Forces. Karam was de-mobilised in 1972 and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972. He was a Diplomat for over ten years. He returned to Singapore in 1982 and remained with the government service till his retirement in Dec 2001. Throughout his career, he remained a passionate and active community serviceman. He was the Secretary-General of the Central Sikh Temple for about six years and a Board Trustee of the Singapore Khalsa Association for many years. He lives in Singapore with his family.
