Product Description

Pixley ka Isaka Seme, the founder of the ANC who was born in 1881, completed his studies in Adams College. He refused a teaching position because he had ambitions to study in America. The author tells how he left for America orphaned and penniless. With the assistance of John Dube and Reverend S. C. Pixley he managed to study at Mt. Hermon School for Boys after which he went to Columbia University in New York. There he won the George William Curtis award, the highest oratorical award through his speech on the Regeneration of Africa. He made it to Columbia University's Hall of Fame, "Columbians ahead of their time" together with the likes of F. D. Roosevelt and Warren Buffet. Seme then left for Oxford, England to study Law. There he founded an African Union and influenced men like the Harvard educated Alain Locke who later became the force behind the Harlem Renaissance. He left for South Africa in 1910 and started the second ever black legal firm in Johannesburg. When he arrived in South Africa he already had the blueprint of a Native National Union in his head. In 1912 he brought black leaders together in Bloemfontein to start the African National Congress. Seme also founded , Abantu-Batho the first national black newspaper which he ran successfully for twenty years and the Native Farmers Association of Africa Limited, a Black Economic Empowerment initiative that purchased land in the Amersfoort area in the Eastern Transvaal and subdivided land amongst 60 members for commercial farming. Today it still exists and is made up of more than 7000 farmers. Seme passed on in 1952 having mentored Anton Lembede who started the ANC Youth League together with the likes of Nelson Mandela, Peter Mda and Walter Sisulu.
