John Akin's tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968 taught him to hunt, to kill and to trust only the men at his side. He returned home to an unsympathetic nation where his new skills were a liability. He had to relearn on his own how to react, how to think and how to avoid a new kind of minefield. None of the jobs or girlfriends or "fake it to make it" personas he tried could erase a year of warfighting, nor rein in his amped up adrenalin response and hones survival instincts. And like many other returned warriors, his experience infiltrated his everyday life.
