Can iconography supplement the ethnography of rituals and the ethnology of a religious tradition? This is what the new study by Jacques Lemoine and Dominique Lemaire, the Taoist triptych of the San Diu of Vietnam Birth Ordination Mort, tends to demonstrate. Based on an exceptional collection of images organized in triptych, this iconological analysis intends to reveal the underlying metaphysics of the religious life of the San Diu, one of the 54 official ethnic groups of Vietnam, originally from China in the late Ming - early from the Qing, that is to say, in the middle of the 17th century, who speak a kind of Cantonese, writing in Chinese characters their ritual texts. The triptych reveals a particular religious structure where, under the patronage of the great Taoist deities, we see the formation of an exorcist intervention battalion commanded by the Three Ladies of Lushan who preside over the birth, ordination and death of their followers. The images clearly show that this metaphysics incorporates some ideas of Tantric Buddhism through colorful characters like Ucchusma or Prince Nezha and with them, various traditions of magic, from that of the Old Lord - Laozi divinized - to the Five Thunders. The authors also sought to evaluate the theology and the sectarian outline of this tradition san diu. When its authenticity is better known, this book will be a valuable base for the study of the healing current shared by all Lushan sects in Southeast China. En se basant sur une collection exceptionnelle d'images organisees en triptyque, cette analyse iconologique entend reveler la metaphysique sous-jacente de la vie religieuse des San Diu, une des 54 ethnies officielles du Vietnam, originaire de Chine a la fin des Ming – debut des Qing, c'est-a-dire au milieu du 17e siecle, qui parlent une sorte de cantonais, ecrivant en caracteres chinois leurs textes rituels. Le triptyque revele une structure religieuse particuliere ou, sous le patronage des grandes divinites taoistes, on voit se constituer un bataillon d'intervention exorciste commande par les Trois Dames de Lushan qui president a la naissance, a l'ordination et a la mort de leurs adeptes. Les images montrent clairement que cette metaphysique incorpore quelques idees du Bouddhisme tantrique a travers des personnages hauts en couleur comme Ucchusma ou le Prince Nezha et avec elles, diverses traditions de magie, depuis celle du Vieux Seigneur – Laozi divinise– jusqu'aux Cinq Tonnerres. Les auteurs ont egalement cherche a evaluer la theologie et le contour sectaire de cette tradition san diu. Quand son authenticite sera mieux connue, ce livre sera une base precieuse pour l'etude du courant guerisseur partage par toutes les sectes de Lushan en Chine du Sud-Est.
