Women living in the northern and eastern provinces became a driving force of the socio-economic development of the country after the termination of three decades of armed conflict. A huge network of women's groups such as NGOs, associations, and the CBOs at the grassroots level played a crucial role in providing livelihood and empowerment initiatives. State and non-state actors use socio-economic development as an entry point for empowerment and reconciliation. Since 2009, women have participated in income-generating activities that contributed to building their socio-economic empowerment, which in turn is paving the way for the sustainable development of the country. The socio-economic empowerment of women in the post-war context has brought tangible changes to the perceptions of women in a traditional community. Specifically, it has redefined roles and responsibilities for women. This working paper is an examination of the current evidence on women’s socio-economic empowerment in the Northern Province.
