This is the first publication of the full excerpt of Orosman and Zafira, considered to be Balagtas' only comedy that has survived to the present day. The transcript was obtained by Hermenegildo Cruz in Lipa, Batangas-- where it was staged in 1877-- and re-typed. H. Cruz gave a copy of the typed copy to Julian Cruz Balmaseda in 1932 and it is now kept in the Balmaseda Collection of the National Library. This book opens the re-glorification of Balagtas as the exemplary and original writer of the Philippines and the introduction and proper appreciation of comedy as the first national Filipino theater.
