On 5th February 1943, the Allied armies in Singapore surrendered to the Imperial Japanese Army after a desperate week-long battle. The British surrender, or the Fall of Singapore as it became known, was the beginning of three and a half years of Japanese occupation of the island. Since then, how have we continued to remember this historic event that changed the course of Singapore’s history? In conjunction with the 80th anniversary of the event, Dislocations: Memoryl land Meaning of the Fall of Singapore, 1942 draws upon personal memories and artefacts to examine how the Battle of Singapore, the surrender, and its aftermath have become “war memories” remembered and retold in different ways.
