Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of the country, has acquired the unsavoury reputation of a backward and slow growing economy. The present book examines the dynamics of development in the state economy. The book is divided into two parts. The papers in Part I examine the performance of UP economy during different time periods since the inception of planning in 1951. The papers provide an indepth analysis of the potential, constraints and challenges before the Uttar Pradesh economy and outline a strategy for rapid economic development of the state. It is suggested that the division of the state into three or four smaller states will lead to a more rapid and balanced process of economic development. This part also presents estimates of rural and urban income and estimates of incremental capital output ratio (ICOR) for U.P. Part II of the volume contains ten papers on different aspect of industrial growth in UP.
