Product Description

An interdisciplinary reassessment of a vital and understudied field. *** The material remains of the houses and the textual evidence of private life are important in our understanding of architecture and the characteristic features of ancient houses and the use of private space. Ancient houses, as structures in which a series of movements took place, constitute an inevitable resource for understanding the religious, political, economic and social characteristics of ancient communities. However, despite our inevitable knowledge of antiquity, these houses leave much research content unappreciated. This book aims to contribute to domestic studies using a broad diachronic and transcultural approach pointing to the Roman, Late Antiquity, Byzantine and Early Islamic periods. Contributions 8th International ANAMED Annual Symposium [The Palimpsest of the House: Re-Assessing Roman, Late Antique, Byzantine, Based on research presented at Early Islamic Living Patterns (Koc University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations in Istanbul, 2013)]. The volume pays special attention to Ancient Constantinople, the site of the symposium, focusing on the developments, continuities, changes and exchanges that took place in the Mediterranean during these time periods. All contributions present new readings of literary and epigraphic evidence, as well as current results and interpretations of field and research projects.
