Referee of a Dirty Ugly Game is a memoir tracing the life and times of Ahmed Issack Hassan, the first Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) under the new Constitution of Kenya 2010. Hassan traces back his early life, schooling and career until he is catapulted into a role that would change his life forever. His narrative details the events that have shaped Kenya’s multiparty democracy from a ‘referee's’ point of view, in a country that has borne and continues to bear the brunt of unmitigated political ambition. It depicts a Chair of an electoral body who did not suffer fools gladly but stood his ground despite mounting pressure and at an enormous personal cost.
