Bethwell A. Ogot’s History and Memory in Independent Kenya: A Re-reading of Raila Odinga’s “The Flame of Freedom” is expressively written and provides an objective and well thought out analysis of Kenya’s political history. It addresses the roles of major players in these struggles, both individuals and groups, and the institutions and organisations through which the struggles were conducted. He underscores the sacrifices that must be made in order to achieve a nation’s transformation from authoritarianism to democratic rule.
