I wrote this book because we need more voices making arguments for the African feminist discourse. Because I am worried that we, feminists, are moving too fast and leaving too many people behind. Because I am worried about the disconnect this difference is creating and the potential aftermath of this disconnect. Most of all, I needed to counter the false narrative that we live in a post-feminist era. African feminism exists independent of the white gaze to eradicate gender inequality in Africa. To create societies where women have capacity for choices, access and human dignity. To empower women rather than build on the reactive trauma expressed against male violence in Africa. To make Africans aware that African women are deserving of the humanity accorded to African men rather than to be a tool to disparage men. To drown out the socialised anti-humanitarian propaganda that surrounds the discourse on the equality of the sexes. To dismantle the patriarchy rather than create new ways of surviving it.
