As this volume stands, especially directed at Priests, Pastors and Preachers of all strata, indices that may just trigger off flashes of inspiration, apart from the Homiletic Highlights, might just be the African Proverb, the Concluding Concept, or the Notes, Quotes and Anecdotes, as the case may be. The amazing galaxy of saints here includes all walks of life and vocations, like martyrs, virgins, popes and other clergy, mystics, kings and queens and even ordinary men and women, both “ancient and modern” among them. It has just been impossible to include some of the very latest of our saints in this volume, for obvious reasons. The few saints presented here and those to follow in subsequent volumes, emphasize their generous surrender to God’s love as they followed the path of their Master and Exemplar, Jesus’ total self-gift and self-emptiness (kenosis). The Church recognizes these Saints, par excellence, as heroes and heroines worthy to be eternally held up for inspiration and direction of us all, even in the different contexts and cultures of our Twenty First Century.
