Mah Meri Animal Folklore is a collection of seven stories. The tales are filled with entertaining animal characters and are a glimpse into how Mah Meri perceives their environment. Mah Meri is one of 19 culturally and linguistically distinct groups of Orang Asli living in Peninsular Malaysia. They are coastal people who live along the coast in Selangor from Sungai Pelek to Carey Island as well as Pulau Ketam. Mah Meri, or Mha Meri means 'people from the forest'. In old literature, they have been referred to as Hma' Btsisi, or Hma’ Besisi, which translates to 'people with scales'. Howeveramong themselves they intimately use Hma' Heh that translates to ‘we people’ or 'our people'. With no written language, their folklore is a repository of their wisdom, culture, customs, traditions, and history handed down from generation to generation.
