Comprising critical writings in civil-military relations theory and research, much of which has actually previously appeared elsewhere, this book of essays integrates the ideas and insights drawn from political science, particularly its sub-fields of comparative politics, theory and methodology both normative and empirical, with those from the combined disciplines of philosophy of science, logic, history, sociology, and development studies, bringing out the relevance of these ideas and insights for understanding and analysing the issues central to the place and role of military in the society. The issues addressed are based within the comparative politics sub-disciplinary specialization of civil-military relations. The data used for illustrations in the comparative work are drawn mostly from the experience of post-independence Africa in general and Nigeria in particular.
