The title of this book, translated into English, “The Chinatown man narrates the Chinatown stories” is most apt as this book written by an octogenarian who has been associated with the Kreta Ayer Area, popularly known as Niu Che Shui or Chinatown of Singapore, for over 80 years. The author lived and grew up, attended school in this area for 22 years before he moved out, after which he had to return to this place regularly to help manage his late father’s business for over half a century. This book includes early history of Chinatown and its various trades, private schools, naming of roads and streets, as well as selected well-known people in the area. The writer gives a first-hand account of the 20th century of Chinatown as he had met and acquaintance with many people, and had also visited the buildings, patronised the shops, as well as witnessed a number of activities including the traditional cultural events there, thus deemed dependable and valid. This book contributes a part of the history of Singapore and serve as useful references for the researchers.
