The regime of General Yakubu Gowon (1966-1975) created Autonomous Twelve States Structure in 1967. A development that was significant in the Political History of Nigeria in general and Kano in particular. The then Kano State had Police Commissioner, Alhaji Audu Bako (1967 to 1975) as its first (Military) Governor. During his eight year visionary leadership, Kano was transformed into a Modern State. Yet, for more than a decade the development projects and programmes executed during PC Audu Bako's tenure which impacted on the life of the people were not adequately documented even in government's publications like Kano State Twenty Years of Progress (1986), Kano State Handbook (1991), Thirty Years of Kano Statehood (1997), among others. More so such publications mainly glorified incumbent administrations at the time. This neglect motivated the author to conduct research and get the work published as a contribution to knowledge on the Contemporary Administrative History of Kano. It is anticipated that the book would be a catalyst for transparent and progressive governance not only in Kano State but in Nigeria as a whole.
