Product Description

The Descriptive Catalogue of Historical Paintings in the Bangladesh National Museum is one of the several catalogues which contain a representative selection of objects of above mentioned title. Since its inception in 1913 A.D. in the erstwhile Dacca Museum (now Bangladesh National Museum) along with other artifacts the collection of Historical Painting grew though in a slow pace. Different art object from this collection have been included in this descriptive catalogue. These have been divided into five categories with 73 historical paintings. The largest category in this catalogue is that of Eid and Muharram procession paintings of Dhaka. Most of the paintings in this descriptive catalogue are real miniatures except the Eid and Muharram procession paintings which have some similarity and dissimilarity with miniature painting. Miniatures are mainly rendered on handmade paper, two dimensional, profusely decorative and narrative style. On the other hand Eid and Muharram procession paintings have some similarity in style but rendered in large format. In those paintings has generally painted by water colour whereas miniatures are painted by tempara and Gouache. We believe that this descriptive catalogue on historical paintings would be of help to researchers, students and others. Moreover, we hope this catalogue would give a new insight to the Art historians, Archeologists and Art connoisseurs.
