The specimens of folk art in Bangladesh National Museum's collection are enormous in number and quite diverse in style and form. A part of this rich collection is regularly exhibited in various permanent exhibition halls of the Bangladesh National Museum, while the rest are preserved in store rooms. Samples for this catalogue have been selected from both the display halls and the section preserved at store rooms. We have primarily emphasized on the materials and mediums of folk art objects production while categorizing them for this descriptive catalogue, such as clay, wood, metal, ivory, etc., in this publication. The plan of this book is as We discuss "folk paintings' in the third chapter, pottery in the fourth, weaving in the fifth, metal crafts in the sixth, wood work in the seventh, bamboo and cane work in the eighth, ivory in the ninth and assorted types of folk art in the tenth chapter. The various samples of folk art covered here include masks. hand-designed fans (Nakshi Pakha). traditional decorated 'cake mould' (Nakshi Pithar Chhanch), rickshaw art and so on. Certain additional factors were taken into consideration in the selection of specimens for this catalogue. Thus, for instance, artworks ranging from ancient to modern periods have been selected from the collection to illustrate how they have evolved over time. Also, artworks made in and collected from different regions have been included in this catalogue.
