Brigadier Sultan Mahmud was commissioned in August 1971 and joined a Mechanized Infantry Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment, the same Battalion his father commanded. He is a third generation Military Officer. His grandfather participated in WW I and his father in WW II. He has remained as an instructor at the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul as well as a Directing Staff at the command and staff college quetta.
