The main jo'oh music and dance ensemble of the Mah Meri people from Kampung Sungai Bumbun, Carey Island, performs songs and music that accompany both sacred and secular events. This book consists of nine songs from the main jo'oh tradition, which encapsulates the Mah Meri's rich cultural heritage. These songs describe the native flora and fauna of the mangrove forests, rivers, and sea surrounding their homeland. They honor the moyang (ancestral spirits) and highlight the Mah Meri's cultural activities and indigenous values. The songs also call for a revitalization of community spirit and solidarity among the Mah Meri people, embodying the Mah Meri values of reciprocation, respect, and balance among humans, nature, and the spiritual realm.
