An important genre of Thai Buddhist literature is the history of Buddha images. The present volume provides romanized transliterations of histories of two celebrated images that have been revered from about the 14th century to this day the Emerald Buddha and the Sihinga Buddha. The histories, or biographies, are composed in Pali, the canonical and liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism. The volume includes an introduction by Santi Pakdeekham and an index of Pali verses. The stories of the two Buddhas are richly illustrated: that of the Emerald Buddha by paintings from Wat Hong Ratanaram in Thonburi and that of the Sihinga Buddha by mural paintings from Wat Phra Kaew Wang Na in Bangkok. The book is a reference work for the study of historical iconography and of Pali literature and Thai Buddhism in general.
