SAADAT HASAN MANTO was a writer of Kashmiri origin, who worked as a scriptwriter in Bollywood. He also wrote short stories, plays and biographical sketches. This book contains a selection of his nonfiction works, previously untranslated. Manto was possibly the best writer on Partition and the 'Hindu-Muslim problem' (as it was known). He chronicled both India and Pakistan as they went through this tumultuous period. Fearing for the safety of his family, Manto left for Pakistan and continued to write, though the opportunities were fewer. He died in 1955, having left behind one of the finest collections of writing in any language on communalism and society. (Journals/Essays)
