The Aburi Accord, also known as the Aburi Declaration, was a meeting held in Aburi, Ghana, on January 4-5, 1967, between Nigerian military leaders to address the escalating political crisis in Nigeria. The goal was to avert civil war by agreeing on a framework for a unified Nigeria. The accord outlined key agreements, including the principle of collective responsibility within the Supreme Military Council and the creation of area commands corresponding to existing regions. While the meeting was initially perceived as successful, disagreements arose over the interpretation and implementation of the agreed-upon resolutions, particularly regarding the role of regional governments and the structure of the military. These disagreements ultimately contributed to the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War.
