A dissatisfied young chemist in the Free State discovers the writings of Christian mystic Thomas a Kempis and begins to dream of an ascetic life as a monk in France. Then he discovers he has a distant uncle who is a retired Catholic priest living in Paris, and a friendship develops between the two men.
