Mohammed Amin (1928–2018) had had no formal education when he began working at the Baranagore Jute Mill at the age of 14. He educated himself, joined the Freedom Struggle, spent twenty-six months in jail, experienced the trauma of Partition, became a communist, got elected as a state legislator and Member of Parliament, served as a minister in the West Bengal Left Front government, and became a member of the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
